Stains in the Sand

Stains in the Sand is the story of Fort Gratiot, the nearly forgotten United States military post once located at the mouth of the St. Clair River in Port Huron, Michigan. Between 1814 and 1879 this fort defended the United States international border with Canada.
 
In this work, authors Bruce Hawkins and Richard Stamps detail the results of nearly half a century of groundbreaking historical and archaeological research to create the definitive study of that fort. This work includes a narrative history of the fort and hundreds of illustrations of artifacts and archaeological remains, to create a story of how the fort changed over time and what life was like for those who lived there during its 65 year existence.
